AC Milan striker Ronaldo has slammed his former Inter fans.

“I have always been grateful to the Inter fans, but they were not like that with me,” Ronaldo told RAI television when reflecting on his time at Inter.

“In 2002 I had to escape with a police escort because I was afraid something nasty could happen to me.”

The main reason behind his decision to join Real Madrid was coach Hector Cuper - who would be fired only a few months later.

“Cuper did not have faith in me and I had none in him. Inter earned a lot of money by selling me, so I don’t think they can really complain.”

The final straw was May 5, 2002, when the Nerazzurri lost the Scudetto on the last day of the season with a 4-2 defeat at Lazio.

“That was the worst day of my career. We were so sure we would win, but once we got on the field we couldn’t seem to do anything.”

Ronaldo says the way he has been embraced by Milan has revitalised him.

He said: “The most emotional moment was when I went back to the locker room after my first brace at Siena. I was the last one in and everybody - bar none - stood up to applaud me.

“It was so wonderful. In 15 years of my career as a professional that had never happened to me before.”
