Ronaldo with Valentino Rossi

Ronaldo was with Inter Milan for five years and majority of that time was spent on the bench due to injury. When Ronaldo moved from Barcelona to Inter Milan he made an instant impact and lead the team to a UEFA Cup in 1998 scoring in the final against Lazio.

In that year it was the biggest signing ever. Ronaldo had a clause stating that he could not leave Barcelona and if he did it would be an immense fee.

This is the reason why Moratti believes Ronaldo was the best signing ever and second because he was the best striker ever.

“I really liked the signing of Ronaldo because no one expected it,” Moratti told Sky Sport Italia.

“Nobody thought that he could be signed. He had a clause in his contract which stated he could leave but the fee was very high.”

“There was a time when it seemed that he had agreed with Barcelona to stay. I remember however one morning I was travelling to Padova when I receieved a call.”

“It was Ronaldo and he said, ‘I have fallen out with Barcelona, I am coming to Inter.”

However, this came to an end when Ronaldo moved to Real Madrid in 2002. This was again the biggest move of the season and it was said that then coach Hector Cuper was the reason for Ronaldo’s move to Madrid.

This is however not true as stated by Moratti.

“No it was not because Cuper wanted to get rid of Ronaldo, it was Ronaldo who wanted to leave,”

“I would have let him go anyway because keeping someone who did not want to stay would have caused problems.”

Ronaldo and Moratti are still very good friends and Moratti often speaks to Ronaldo.

“I heard from him recently after his injury. He called me and he was really affectionate but he seemed down.”

Ronaldo has played for the biggest clubs in Europe - Barcelona, Inter Milan, Real Madrid and AC Milan.

“It was brilliant, absolutely brilliant for a year but then there was much suffering after he injured himself.”
