Corinthians vs Sao Paulo Highlights
Ronaldo apologises to fans
Ronaldo apologised to the Corinthians fans after he made an obscene gesture with his middle finger after a surprise loss to Paulista in the Sao Paulo state championship.
The phenomenon who has struggled with form this season was heckled by upset fans after leaving the stadium on Wednesday. Ronaldo had to get off the bus and was driven in a private car for his own protection. It was said that about 30 fans cursed and shouted at Ronaldo as he was about to enter the private car.
Ronaldo said the gesture was made to someone who offended him morally and personally at the stadium’s parking lot. He did not elaborate.
“I would never make a gesture like that to Corinthians fans, who have adopted me and supported me since my arrival,” Ronaldo said. “I want to apologise if any Corinthians fans felt offended and [I want to] reiterate my admiration for them.”
Television images shown later did not clarify to whom the gesture was made, but the group of fans was in Ronaldo’s direction.
Ronaldo understood and accepted the criticism from fans, but is hoping they will start supporting the team again in the match against rival Sao Paulo tomorrow.
Corinthians, the defending state champion, is fifth in the 20-team standings, but it could drop further after Thursday’s matches. Only the top four will advance to the semifinal stage, which begins next month.
Ronaldo struggled in the team’s home loss to Paulista and admitted he was far from his best.
“I made childish mistakes,” said Ronaldo.
Mano Menezes confirms Ronaldo to play against Sao Paulo and Cerro Porteno

After being rested against Gremio Prudente, Ronaldo has been included in the squad to face Paulista tonight. Coach Mano Menezes has stated that he expects a better performance from Ronaldo after Ronaldo was criticised for struggling to score in consecutive games.
After the training on Tuesday, Mano also confirmed that Ronaldo will also play against Sao Paulo and Cerro Porteno on 28th March and 1st April respectively.
“I see a great possibility of Ronaldo having a better stay in this new field, starting with the Paulista,” said Menezes.
Mano believes that the phenomenon will increase production gradually with the pace of the team. However, it is important that Ronaldo remains injury free after losing six games during the start of the season due to injury.
